Botanical Name

PENSTEMON digitalis 'Mystica'

Plant Common Name

Mystica Talus Slope Penstemon, Talus Slope Penstemon

General Description

A favorite of hummingbirds, foxglove beardtongue is a tall herbaceous perennial native to central and eastern North America. The narrowly oval leaves of the cultivar 'Mystica' are deep bronze-red in spring, mature to dark green with red overtones, and turn bright red in fall. In late spring and early summer it bears tall spires of very pale lavender-pink bell-shaped flowers. The basal leaves persist over winter.

This beauty likes full or partial sun and well-drained soil, and shrugs off heat and summer dampness. Deadhead after bloom to promote longevity and prevent self-sowing. Use it as a cut flower, in the perennial border, or in a wildflower planting.
