General Description

With scarlet-red, dome-shaped blossom clusters, the Athena Petite Scarlet starcluster continues the reputation of being a butterfly and hummingbird magnet in the garden. This tropical, shrubby, evergreen perennial that is often grown as a bedding annual in frost-affected climates has a smaller mature size. As a hybrid, it was derived from everblooming African or Arabian starcluster species with dark green, lance-shaped leaves.

Heat and drought tolerant once established, Egyptian starclusters are best grown in full to part sun and fertile, moist soil with good drainage. Those of the Athena Series are easy to grow and work well in sunny annual borders and beds, butterfly gardens or containers. Perfect for spilling over hanging basket or container edges is the smaller 'Athena Petite Scarlet'. In tropical regions it will perennialize to form a billowing groundcover.
