Egyptian Starcluster, Pentas, Starflower
Talk about a butterfly magnet! Egyptian starcluster is a tropical, shrubby, evergreen perennial that is often grown as an annual in temperate climates. This everblooming North African native has dark green, lance-shaped leaves and bears many clusters of small tubular, star-shaped flowers that may be red, pink, white or lavender, depending on the cultivar. There are lots of selections to choose from, including the compact, floriferous members of the New Look series. Deadhead plants regularly to encourage continued bloom.
Heat and drought tolerant once established, Egyptian starcluster prefers full to part sun and fertile soil with good drainage. It is vigorous, easy to grow and works well in sunny borders, butterfly gardens or container plantings.
