Family

Hydrangeaceae

Botanical Name

PHILADELPHUS lewisii 'Blizzard'

Plant Common Name

Blizzard Mockorange, Wild Mockorange

General Description

The mockorange cultivar 'Blizzard' becomes a show-stopper in late spring and early summer when large fragrant white blossoms cover its upright to arching branches. This exceptionally cold-hardy selection originated as a garden seedling in Beaverlodge, Alberta, Canada.

Philadelphus lewisii is a fast growing, medium-sized, deciduous shrub that inhabits seasonally moist valleys and slopes from southwestern Canada to the northwestern United States. It has oval, smooth to weakly toothed, medium to dark green leaves and gray-brown stems. The four-petaled, citrus-scented blooms are borne on the previous year's growth.

Grow 'Blizzard' in full sun or light shade in moist, well-drained, acidic to mildly alkaline soil. Established plants tolerate drought. Of relatively brief seasonal interest, this shrub works best in naturalistic plantings or mixed borders. Prune old branches back to strong new growth immediately after bloom.
