Phlox divaricata ssp. laphamii
Wild Blue Phlox, Woodland Phlox
Wild blue phlox is a low spring-blooming herbaceous perennial from eastern and central North America. It bears clouds of starry blue or white flowers on upright or splayed stems. The flowers are often sweetly fragrant. Occuring in the western part of woodland phlox's native range, the subspecies laphamii bears flowers that lack the notched petal tips typical of other forms. Plants creep slowly to form clumps of oval semi-evergreen leaves. Self-sowing often occurs if plants are not deadheaded. This variety has given rise to several cultivars including the hybrid 'Chattahoochee.'
Wild blue phlox thrives in moist fertile well drained soil and partial shade. Its clouds of spring blooms and creeping habit make this an excellent plant for naturalizing in woodland gardens.
