PHLOX drummondii '21st Century Blue Star'( 21ST CENTURY SERIES)
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
The pretty and easy-to-grow, heat-tolerant 21st Century Series Blue Star phlox bears cheerful clusters of starry flowers that are mauve-lavender with a deeper purple-blue eye. The compact, mounding plants produce side branches readily, forming a full specimen and bloom across the heat of summer, not just in spring and fall. This low, mounding, frost-tender annual is a highly bred selection of the Texas native Phlox drummondii.
Small, narrow, lance-shaped leaves adorn the tender stems. Tiny hairs cover the leaves and stems and give the plants a sticky sensation when touched. The flowers appear a few weeks after the seeds germinate. The five-petaled blooms are tubular at the base and flattened and radial at the mouth. The bicolored blossoms attract butterflies and have a light, sweet scent.
Grow annual phlox in full sun and fertile, well-drained garden soil. Plant it outdoors only after the danger of frost has passed. Better tolerant of summertime heat, they may also be planted as a winter annual in hot climates. This cultivar offers a pretty show with unique coloration in seasonal annual beds and along container edges.
