PHLOX drummondii 'Brilliant'
Annual Phlox, Brilliant Annual Phlox
The heirloom Drummond's phlox ‘Brilliant’ first became available over a century ago. This old-fashioned annual is best known for its dense clusters of cheerful pink flowers with rosy pink centers. It is a taller cultivar with a more upright habit than most. This short-lived annual is a highly bred selection of the Texas native Phlox drummondii.
Small, narrow, lance-shaped leaves adorn the tender stems of Drummond's phlox. Tiny hairs cover the leaves and stems and give the plants a sticky sensation when touched. The flowers appear a few weeks after the seeds germinate. The five-petaled blooms are tubular at the base and flattened and radial at the mouth. Those of ‘Brilliant’ are pink with darker centers. The blossoms attract butterflies and have a light, sweet scent.
Grow annual phlox in full sun and fertile, well-drained garden soil. Plant it outdoors only after the danger of frost has passed. It does not fare well in high heat and is best planted as a winter annual in southern zones where hard freezes are rare. Annual phlox offers a pretty show in seasonal annual beds and along container edges. This long-stemmed cultivar is also great for cutting.
