Phlox drummondii( Petticoat Mix)
Annual Phlox, Petticoat Mix Phlox
Phlox in the Petticoat Mix produce clouds of starry, jagged-edged flowers on dwarf bushy plants. These low, mounding, frost-tender annuals are highly bred selections of the Texas native Phlox drummondii. They are propagated from seed, but often sold as seedlings.
Small, narrow, lance-shaped leaves adorn the compact, upright stems of Petticoat Mix phlox. Tiny glandular hairs cover the plants, giving them a sticky feel. Clusters of small, flat-faced, five-petaled blooms open in late winter or early spring, continuing while conditions remain cool. Each petal is deeply cut into three irregular lobes, creating a jagged, starburst effect. Plants in the Petticoat Mix flower in an array of colors including white, deep pink, fuchsia-red, magenta or violet-rose, with some plants producing bicolored, white-edged blooms. The blossoms attract butterflies and have a light, sweet scent.
Grow these annual phlox in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Direct-sow seed or plant out seedlings after danger of frost has passed. Plants bloom about 10 weeks after germination. In regions with hot arid summers, use these phlox as spring or winter annuals. They are lovely in bedding displays and containers, both in the garden and under glass.
