The pretty and easy-to-grow Astoria™ Silver ('Sunphlocobu') bears clusters of mysterious ghostly lavender-white with a tiny purple eye. Compact in height, mounding but spreading its stems horizontally, this small, short-lived annual originates from the Texas native Phlox drummondii. It has great vigor, flowering most consistently in spring and autumn, with a respite in summer's heat.
Small, narrow, lance-shaped leaves adorn the tender stems of annual phlox. Tiny hairs cover the leaves and stems and give the plants a sticky sensation when touched. The flowers appear a few weeks after the seeds germinate. The five-petaled blooms are tubular at the base and flattened and radial at the mouth. Astoria™ Silver phlox's are palest lavender, looking silvery, with a tiny purple center, attracting butterflies and having a light, sweet scent.
Grow annual phlox in full sun and fertile, well-drained garden soil. Plant it outdoors only after the danger of frost has passed. It does not fare well in high heat and is best planted as a winter annual in warm regions (hot summers, mild winters) where hard freezes are rare. This phlox offers a pretty show in seasonal annual beds, spilling over container edges and hanging baskets, or as a temporary groundcover in mixed borders.
