Garden Phlox, Purple Flame® Garden Phlox

General Description

Very large clusters of purple-pink blossoms cover Purple Flame® in summer. This well-branched, bushy, dwarf cultivar also has dark green leaves with good mildew resistance.

Garden phlox is a long time garden favorite. It is a hardy, herbaceous perennial that originates from eastern North America. The upright, bushy plant produces big panicles of colorful flowers in midsummer. The individual flowers are five-petaled, tubular and those of Purple Flame® are deep purple-pink. The fragrant blooms will continue to appear into late summer and early fall, especially if deadheaded, and are highly attractive to butterflies.

Plant garden phlox in sites with full to partial sun and fertile, evenly moist soil with average to good drainage. Garden phlox foliage is highly susceptible to powdery mildew, but Purple Flame® has shown resistance to outbreaks. This phlox has a number of garden uses. It is a major butterfly lure, the flowers are great for cutting and look pretty in informal wildflower bouquets, and it is ideal for flower gardens and container culture.
