Garden Phlox, Tall Phlox
The compact and floriferous Volcano™ Pink with White Eye is a colorful, sturdy, robust phlox that is highly tolerant of powdery mildew. This Anthony Tesselaar International introduction was first made available in 2004.
Garden phlox is one of those must have old-fashioned garden flowers. This hardy, herbaceous perennial originates from eastern North America. It has a bushy habit and produces enormous, conical panicles of colorful flowers in midsummer. The individual flowers are five-petaled, tubular and pretty soft pink with white halos around the eyes. They offer a sweet light fragrance and will continue to appear into late summer and early fall, especially if deadheaded, and are highly attractive to butterflies.
Plant garden phlox in sites with full to partial sun and fertile, evenly moist soil with average to good drainage. It is highly susceptible to powdery mildew, so count on battling a yearly defoliating mildew attack. This phlox has a number of garden uses. It is a major butterfly lure, the flowers are great for cutting and look pretty in informal wildflower bouquets, and it’s ideal for tall perennial borders.
