Family

Polemoniaceae

Botanical Name

PHLOX stolonifera

Plant Common Name

Creeping Phlox

General Description

As befits its common name, this evergreen perennial from eastern North America creeps to form mats of narrow foliage. In spring, showy spikes of fragrant blue, purple, pink, or white flowers arise on compact stems. Many named forms are available, including 'Bruce's White' and 'Sherwood Purple'.

Plant creeping phlox in partial shade and moist, acid, well drained soil. It tolerates full sun if the soil does not dry. This versatile plant is as at home in formal borders as it is in a naturalistic setting. Use it as a ground cover, or allow it to weave among larger plants such as interrupted fern (Osmunda claytoniana) and spikenard (Aralia racemosa).
