Family

Lamiaceae

Botanical Name

PHYSOSTEGIA virginiana

Plant Common Name

Obedient Plant

General Description

Bearing flowers that obediently stay in place when shifted but possessing romping underground rhizomes that are not so well behaved, Physostegia virginiana is a herbaceous perennial from eastern and central North America. From mid-summer to fall it produces dense, knee- to waist-high spikes of tubular flowers that are varying shades of violet-pink or white, depending on the cultivar. These are a magnet for hummingbirds and bees. The toothed, lance-shaped leaves are glossy, deep green. Plants spread rapidly to form broad, dense clumps.

Obedient plant likes full to part sun and moist, average to well drained soil. To keep them manageable, it is best to divide plants every two to three years. Give them ample room to expand. This perennial makes a wonderful addition to wildflower plantings, hummingbird gardens or mixed borders.
