Family

Lamiaceae

Botanical Name

PHYSOSTEGIA

Plant Common Name

Physostegia

General Description

Comprising 12 different herbaceous perennials native to central and eastern North America, Physostegia is represented in gardens by only one – P virginiana. Bearing flowers that obediently stay in place when shifted but possessing romping underground rhizomes that are not so well behaved, P virginiana produces dense knee- to waist-high spikes of tubular flowers in mid- to late summer (or late summer to early fall). These are a magnet for hummingbirds and bees. Flowers are varying shades of violet-pink or white, depending on the cultivar. The toothed lance-shaped leaves are usually pure glossy-green but are white-margined in the cultivar 'Variegata.' Plants spread rapidly to form broad, dense clumps.

Obedient plant likes full to part sun and moist, average to well drained soil. To keep them manageable, it is best to divide plants every two to three years. Give them ample room to expand. This perennial makes a wonderful addition to wildflower plantings, hummingbird gardens or mixed borders.
