PICEA abies 'Little Gem'

Image of Picea abies 'Little Gem'

Mark A. Miller

Family

Pinaceae

Botanical Name

PICEA abies 'Little Gem'

Plant Common Name

Little Gem Norway Spruce, Norway Spruce

General Description

This is a dwarf evergreen spruce grown for its tidy, mounding habit, short needles, and flat top. Large deep-green to brown female cones nest among dense, dark green needles. The Little Gem Norway Spruce delivers the best qualities of the Picea abies family in a miniature package. P. abies, which is native to northern Europe, tolerates heat and humidity better than other spruces, and does especially well where summers are cool.

It grows best in deep, moist, but well-drained soil in full sun. Add leaf mould or compost to the soil each year. Prune Little Gem only to shape it. Green aphids, pine needle scale, and Cooley spruce gall adelgid can be bothersome pests. The Little Gem Norway Spruce is wonderful in containers, as a foundation planting, or in rock gardens.
