General Description

This dwarf evergreen shrub is an exceptional plant for rock gardens and mountain communities. Its parent species is the black spruce tree of North American forests that can be found from Newfoundland to Alaska in peat bogs and moist upland sites. This indicates a tolerance for wet ground, which is a valuable problem solver where soils are too dense or poorly drained for other conifers. This squat ground hugging shrub produces fine branching covered with a soft gray bark. Short, four sided dark blue-green needles are densely held to create a soft looking mound.

Dwarf spruce is exceptional planted amidst boulders where it will adapt to their form for firm visual anchorage. Provide plants an open location with full sun and protection from drying winter winds, which can burn or discolor the foliage and cause spotty die out. Use ‘Ericoides’ in Asian garden design to create beautifully formed masses that can be shaped in the bonsai style. It is also well adapted to containers and is often grouped with alpine succulents in troughs.
