Family

Pinaceae

Botanical Name

PICEA omorika 'Nana'

Plant Common Name

Serbian Spruce

General Description

The densely compact Serbian spruce ‘Nana’ is surprisingly tolerant of extended summer heat. The standard species is a large, elegant evergreen tree—a far cry from this slow-growing dwarf. In the wild, Serbian spruce can be found in Serbia and Bosnia where it exists at high elevations along regional mountain ridges and favors calcareous soils.

Early on ‘Nana’ has a rounded habit but develops a more pyramidal shape at maturity. Its short needles are flattened, shiny and dark green. Each has two white bands on the underside, which gives the tree an overall silvery effect that is especially noticeable in when the light catches the branches.

Grow Serbian spruce in full sun and neutral to alkaline soil that is rich and friable but has good drainage. It is a slow growing spruce that is best planted along foundations, shrub borders or in a rockery, either singly or in groups. It shows exceptional tolerance to air pollution, which makes it ideal for urban plantings.
