PIERIS japonica 'Forest Flame'

Image of Pieris japonica 'Forest Flame'

James H. Schutte

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

PIERIS japonica 'Forest Flame'

Plant Common Name

Forest Flame Pieris, Japanese Pieris

General Description

A hybrid between the two East-Asian species Pieris floribunda and Pieris formosa, 'Forest Flame' is a medium-sized broadleaf evergreen named for its kaleidescope foliage that matures from red, orange and pink shades to dark glossy green. In early spring it bears large, cascading, tassle-like clusters of pinkish buds that open to white flowers. With its rounded habit, sinuous branches, peeling bark, attractive foliage, unique showy blooms, decorative winter buds, and resistance to deer, this plant makes an excellent specimen or border plant for a site with moist, acidic, well-drained soil, and protection from cold winds and harsh sunlight.
