PIERIS japonica 'Little Heath Green'

Image of Pieris japonica 'Little Heath Green'

James Burghardt

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

PIERIS japonica 'Little Heath Green'

Plant Common Name

Japanese Pieris

General Description

An elegant and hardy evergreen shrub, Japanese pieris offers something for every season. Selected for its dwarf habit and colorful leaves and stems, 'Little Heath Green' features small, glossy deep green, laurel-like leaves that are bronze-red when new and again in winter. The stems are also red. The fragrant flowers – resemble those of lily of the valley – are sparse or absent. A fifth the height of full-sized Japanese pieris cultivars, 'Little Heath Green' grows very slowly into a dense knee-high mound.

With its handsome form, showy foliage, compact size and resistance to deer, 'Little Heath Green' is an excellent addition to partially shaded areas of the garden. Preferring moist, acidic, well-drained soil, it works well as a containerized specimen or in a wall, rock garden, or patio planting. At the margins of its hardiness range it requires protection from harsh conditions such as wind, drought, winter sun, and severe heat or cold. Watch for lacebugs, which discolor and disfigure the foliage.
