Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

PIERIS japonica 'Temple Bells'

Plant Common Name

Japanese Pieris, Temple Bells Pieris

General Description

Japanese pieris is a medium-sized broadleaf evergreen shrub native to eastern China, Japan and Taiwan. A slow-growing, horizontally branched selection from the Ryukyu Islands, the cultivar 'Temple Bells' bears fountaining tassle-like clusters of pinkish buds that open to relatively large, fragrant white flowers in early spring. Its leaves are bronze-red when young, maturing to glossy dark green. With its tiered habit, peeling bark, attractive foliage, unique showy blooms, decorative winter buds, and resistance to deer, 'Temple Bells' makes an excellent specimen or border plant for a site with moist, acidic, well-drained soil, and protection from cold winds and harsh sunlight.
