General Description

This handsome, cold-hardy, small- to medium-sized evergreen tree comes from mountains of western North America from Canada to Mexico.

The medium to long, supple, bluish-green needles of this pine are held in bundles of five toward the tips of long flexible branches. The densely borne needles have conspicuous white lines on their upper surface. In spring, trees produce tiny male cones and large female cones near the branch tips. The yellowish brown female cones mature in 2 years, dropping soon after they shed their seed.

Conical and low-branched when young, this slow- to moderate-growing pine is irregular and round-topped at maturity. Its smooth gray bark becomes scaly, furrowed, and brown with age.

This tough, handsome tree favors full sun and well-drained soil. It fares poorly in hot climates. Its informal habit suits it for use in naturalistic settings, either singly or in groups. Its many dwarf selections make ideal rock garden or bonsai subjects. Like many other five-needle pines it is vulnerable to white pine blister rust, a fungal disease accidentally introduced from Europe.
