Family

Pinaceae

Botanical Name

PINUS mugo 'Mitsch Mini'

Plant Common Name

Dwarf Swiss Mountain Pine, Mitsch Mini Mugho Pine, Mugho Pine

General Description

Mugho pine is a dense, shrubby, evergreen conifer native to the mountains of south-central Europe and the Balkan Peninsula. The dwarf cultivar 'Mitsch Mini' slowly forms a low domed cushion of densely needled branches.

The short, stiff, crowded needles of this pine occur in bundles of two. The stubby branches grow a fingernail's length per year, eventually forming a tight, finely textured, hand-high mound.

Mugho pine is best planted in full sun and average to well-drained soil. Its relative lime-tolerance suits it for planting near concrete foundations or walkways. This cultivar works well in Asian-style gardens, rock gardens, and containers.
