Botanical Name
Pittosporum tobira 'Turner's Dwarf' PP4919
Plant Common Name
Japanese Cheesewood
General Description
A compact habit, slow growth and beautifully variegated foliage set this Pittosporum apart from the rest. This functional and pretty mounded shrub is ideal for landscapes where winters are mild.
Japanese mock orange is a large broadleaf evergreen shrub native to eastern Asia. Its thick branches bear dense whorls of large, glossy, leathery, oval leaves. The pretty leaves have irregular pale yellow edges and look great all season. Terminal clusters of creamy white, bell-shaped, sweetly fragrant flowers appear in spring, followed by orange pea-sized fruit that opens to reveal red seeds.
This shrub prefers sun or partial shade and moist, fertile, well-drained soil. It is highly salt and drought tolerant. This tender shrub is ideal for hedging, screening and foundation plantings, where hardy. In temperate zones, it is commonly grown as an indoor specimen for sunny spacious rooms or greenhouses. The greens of Pittosporum tobira are commonly used as filler in flower arrangements because they are long-lasting and pretty.
