POLEMONIUM 'Blue Pearl'
Hybrid Jacob's Ladder
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
The powdery-blue flowers and fine-textured, ferny leaves of ‘Blue Pearl’ Jacob's ladder bring delight to a late spring garden. This clump-forming perennial is a complex hybrid derived from plants native to the mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere where the soils are cool and moist.
The fern-like leaves of this selection are sword-shaped and divided into dozens of tiny leaflets that are held out perpendicularly to the central stem, resembling the rungs of a ladder. In late spring or early summer, wispy, branched stems rise upward and display loose clusters of five-petalled light-blue flowers. In the center of each fragrant bloom are bright yellow stamens with pollen.
Grow 'Blue Pearl' in partial sun to partial shade in cool, moist, fertile soil, include moist clays. Intolerant of high summer heat and humidity, this plant thrives in higher elevation gardens. It may re-bloom by early autumn if spent flowers re removed regularly in spring. It is a nice choice for borders, woodland gardens, shaded rock gardens and simply as specimens that draw the nose and eye with fragrant flowers and lovely foliage.
