POLEMONIUM boreale

Image of Polemonium boreale

Family

Polemoniaceae

Botanical Name

POLEMONIUM boreale

Plant Common Name

Northern Jacob's Ladder

General Description

A circumboreal plant, northern Jacob's ladder is a low-growing herbaceous perennial native across the lands surrounding the Arctic Ocean. Botton-sized yellow-eyed blue flowers appear on compact stems in late spring and summer above clumps of attractive, deep green, fernlike foliage. The flowers are larger and more fragrant than those of the common Jacob's ladder, Polemonium caeruleum.

Place northern Jacob's ladder in cool conditions and moist, well drained soil. Deadhead spent flower spikes to coax a second flowering cycle and prevent self-sowing. It works well in a partly shaded rock garden or mixed border.
