POLIANTHES tuberosa 'The Pearl'

Image of Polianthes tuberosa 'The Pearl'

Jessie Keith

Family

Amaryllidaceae

Botanical Name

POLIANTHES tuberosa 'The Pearl'

Plant Common Name

Tuberose

General Description

Heavenly fragrance from semi-double, waxy white flowers make ‘The Pearl’ tuberose a beloved cutflower and an intriguing plant for sunny borders and patio containers. A perennial that is often seasonally deciduous, this Mexican native grows from a tuberous rhizome (underground stem).

Its leaves are long and strap-like, forming a clump of basal foliage. They range in color from mid-green to soft blue-green. After a long, warm, growing season, tall stems rise from the leaves and display dusty-lavender, plump buds that open to loose clusters of semi-double, star-like, white flowers. The trumpet-like blossom's fragrance rivals that of the gardenia. After blooming, green fruits with seeds develop and are shed, and the foliage wanes as winter's cold or seasonal drought sets in.

Grow 'The Pearl' in full sun in well-drained soils that have some fertility. The rhizomes can survive in the ground as long as the soil does not freeze, but often they are lifted and dried over winter (stored like gladiolus, canna or caladium in sand), especially outside of the subtropics. Tuberose can be easily grown in a container, in the landscape, in the mixed border or in a cutting garden. At least four months of a warm-growing season is needed to induce flowers, so start plants indoors if needed before relocating outside.

Note that single-form flowers of tuber rose last slightly longer as cutflowers than the semi-double 'The Pearl.'
