POLYSTICHUM makinoi

Image of Polystichum makinoi

James Burghardt

Family

Dryopteridaceae

Botanical Name

POLYSTICHUM makinoi

Plant Common Name

Makinoi's Hollyfern

General Description

Distinctive for its handsome, bright olive-green fronds with a satin-gloss finish, Makino's holly fern also has attractive brown scales on the frond stems. A clumping evergreen fern native to the mountain woodlands of southern Asia, from eastern India to China and to the Philippines, it grows from a short, stubby but erect rhizome.

The fronds are elongated, taper to a triangular tip, and divided into leaflets. The frond's stem, called a stipe, is lined in chestnut brown scales, adding nice color and textural contrast. Like all ferns, it reproduces by spores. They are borne on underside of the leaflets in summer, and range in color from yellow-brown to black.

Grow Makinoi's holly fern in partial to deep shade in moist, well-drained soils rich in humus. Beautiful in masses as a groundcover in a woodland garden or shaded rockery, clusters can also be enjoyed in the shade of a building foundation bed. Indoors it can be raised in a brightly lit sunroon. The fronds are great for long-lasting filler foliage in floral arrangements.
