Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

POTENTILLA fruticosa 'Primrose Beauty'

Plant Common Name

Shrubby Cinquefoil

General Description

Grown for its summer-long display of large pale yellow buttercup-shaped flowers, 'Primrose Beauty' is a cultivar of shrubby cinquefoil, a small twiggy deciduous shrub from north temperate regions. Borne in profusion in early summer and in lesser abundance from midsummer to fall, the flowers contrast nicely with the divided silvery gray leaves. The stems of this low wide-spreading shrub develop modestly attractive peeling bark with age.

This extremely cold-hardy plant is adapted to average to poor sandy or gravelly soils. It fares poorly in hot humid climates. Old stems should be removed to keep it looking neat and well kept. Shrubby cinquefoils also benefit from a light trim in midsummer to remove spent flowers. This cultivar makes a fine plant for low hedges, foundation plantings, and mixed borders.
