POTENTILLA fruticosa 'Sunset'

Image of Potentilla fruticosa 'Sunset'

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

POTENTILLA fruticosa 'Sunset'

Plant Common Name

Shrubby Cinquefoil

General Description

Grown for its summer-long display of orange buttercup-shaped flowers which are slightly darker and later than those of 'Tangerine,' 'Sunset' is a cultivar of shrubby cinquefoil, a small twiggy deciduous shrub from north temperate regions. Debuting in midsummer and continuing more sparsely through late summer into fall, the flowers contrast nicely with the small divided green leaves. The stems of this shrub develop modestly attractive peeling bark with age.

This extremely cold-hardy plant is adapted to average to poor sandy or gravelly soils. Its flowers fade in heat and strong sunlight and so look best in light shade. It fares poorly in hot humid climates. Old stems should be removed to keep it looking neat and well kept. Shrubby cinquefoils also benefit from a light trim in midsummer to remove spent flowers. This cultivar makes a fine plant for low hedges, foundation plantings, and mixed borders.
