General Description

Shrubby cinquefoil is a compact, bushy, flowering shrub with dainty foliage. This very hardy plant is native across all north temperate regions from Asia to North America. The variety veitchii is best known for its many white buttercup-like flowers that appear with regularity from summer to frost. These contrast nicely with its small green to gray-green leaves. As branches age, they develop nice peeling bark.

This plant is adapted to average to poor sandy or gravely soils and prefers full sun. Over time, old stems should be removed to keep these plants looking neat and well kept. Potentilla is susceptible to spider mites and powdery mildew. They are fine plants for low hedges, foundation plantings and mixed borders and there are many cultivars to choose from.
