Kieft-Pro-Seeds

Family

Primulaceae

Botanical Name

PRIMULA capitata 'Noverna Blue'

Plant Common Name

Primrose

General Description

This hardy, violet blue-flowered primrose will bloom in its first year from seed. It is a vigorous bloomer that is ideal for greenhouse culture and the florist’s potted flower industry.

In spring, this perennial offers rosettes of oblong green leaves with serrated edges. Its flower stems are dusted with fine white fuzz for increased graphic interest. The flowers of 'Noverna Blue' are cool viole-blue. The rounded clusters of tubular blooms appear in late spring and contrast nicely with the white stems. If promptly deadheaded, they will continue to appear through to early summer.

Asiatic in origin, Primula capitata grows best in full sun and moist, boggy ground. It is native to the moist alpine regions of India and Tibet where it inhabits grassy slopes, forest margins and stream banks. Sheltered woodland sites are also suitable. This primula does not grow well in hot locations and will shelter into dormancy if conditions become too warm.
