General Description

This hardy Asiatic primrose offers a unique look and problem solving opportunities for poorly drained sites. It is native to moist alpine regions of India and Tibet in grassy slopes, forest margins and stream banks. The plant is composed of a rosette of oblong serrated green leaves. Its flower stems are dusted with striking white powder for increased graphic interest. This is technically a perennial plant, but it can become rather short lived in gardens.

The flowers of Primula capitata occur in just one color, a deep violet purple. They bloom in late spring, held in a tight powdery button of stems connecting many tubular blooms. The contrast of the white stems with dark blue flowers is striking and deserve up close viewing. They are a beloved cut flower that should be promptly deadheaded to keep them coming through early summer. This primrose asks for sheltered woodland conditions. It can also grow in full sun but only if the roots are in wet to boggy ground. After flowering these plants go dormant with the heat of summer.
