Primulaceae
Primula obconica
German Primrose
A tender evergreen herbaceous perennial usually employed as an annual or houseplant, this Chinese native produces terminal clusters of large flowers in late winter and spring, or nearly year round in areas with mild winters and summers. The salverform flowers come in shades of pink, lavender, purple, red, and white. The rounded leaves have hairs which can irritate skin. Many cultivars have been selected, including ones with non-irritating hairs.
P. obconica requires partial shade and moist, well drained, humus-rich soil, and resents summer heat. Plant in mixed borders, as a bedding plant with flowering bulbs, or in rock gardens with plants such as cyclamen.
