Family
Rosaceae
Botanical Name
PRUNUS cerasifera 'Atropurpurea'
Plant Common Name
Cherry Plum, Pissard Plum, Purpleleaf Plum
General Description
Valued for its decorative, purple-red foliage, this ornamental cherry makes an eye-catching focal point in the landscape. It grows quickly to form a dense, symmetrical, medium-sized tree. The colorful foliage emerges bright red in spring, darkening to burgundy, then developing green and bronze undertones by the end of summer. Fall color is purple-red. A display of showy, single, white to light pink flowers appears in spring, followed by a crop of purple, cherry-sized, edible fruits. These are also enjoyed by birds, and can create a temporary mess on sidewalks, driveways and walkways.
This fast-growing tree prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. It is typically short-lived, and may start to decline after 10 to 15 years. Although susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, its fast growth and striking appearance make this tree worthwhile to many people. It is best grown as a single specimen.
