Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

PRUNUS persica 'Flordaqueen'

Plant Common Name

Flordaqueen Peach, Peach, Yellow Semi-Clingstone Peach

General Description

Requiring scant chilling to make good crops, this University of Florida introduction is heralded for its high heat and humidity tolerance. First made available in the 1960s, it was bred primarily for the North Florida peach industry, but is not as widely grown today.

This medium-sized tree has curved, lance-shaped, bright green leaves that turn yellow in fall. In early spring it bursts into a haze of pink, fragrant, five-petaled flowers. In northern zones, these have potential to be damaged by frost.

This self-fertile cultivar ripens its medium-sized peaches in late spring. The yellow, red-blushed fruits have firm, yellow, semi-cling flesh. It is good for fresh eating as well as canning and cooking.

Peaches need full sun, fertile well-drained soil and clear, hot weather to ripen. The trees should be pruned annually while dormant to encourage better fruit production, though this cultivar does not require as much thinning as others. If fruit set is excessive, thin the immature peaches to produce a smaller crop of larger fruits. Though it requires less cold than your average peach, be sure to check with your local extension agent to make sure that ‘Flordaqueen’ will produce a sufficient crop where you live.

Most peaches are grafted. Those on dwarfing rootstock are ideal for small yards and containers. Smaller specimens can also be espaliered against a wall or fence.
