Purple Sand Cherry, Purpleleaf Sand Cherry
Purpleleaf sand cherry is a medium-sized deciduous shrub resulting from the cross between sand cherry (Prunus pumila) and the cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera 'Atropurpurea'). The foliage emerges an intense purple-red and matures to coppery purple. Dainty, fragrant, pinkish flowers appear in spring, contrasting nicely with the purple foliage. Small, cherry-like, dark-purple fruit sometimes follows in summer that are favored by wildlife, tasting sweetly acidic to humans.
Purpleleaf sand cherry is best located in a full sun situation with a well drained soil. It works well in mixed borders and patio and foundation plantings. This is one of the few exceptional and reliable purple-foliaged shrubs for regions with very cold winters.
