Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

PUSCHKINIA scilloides

Plant Common Name

Striped Squill

General Description

The small but showy Puschkinia, or striped squill, is a bulbous perennial that blooms very early in the season. Each bulb produces two strap-shaped upright leaves, soon followed by a short, leafless flower stem bearing up to ten bell-shaped flowers. The flowers are bluish-white with fine blue lines down the center of each petal. Over time, the bulbs naturalize and spread to form sweeps of soft color.

Puschkinia, native from the Caucasus to Iran, grows and flowers best in sites with full or partial sun and well-drained soil of average fertility. This is a true spring ephemeral that appears in late winter to early spring, before the leaves of deciduous trees and shrubs appear, and goes dormant by late spring, once shade engulfs the understory. Plant in masses along woodland edges or in clumps in rock gardens alongside early daffodils and species tulips. Striped squill bulbs can be chilled and forced indoors as winter container specimens.
