PYRACANTHA angustifolia 'Monon'(YUKON BELLE®)
Narrow-leaved Firethorn, Yukon Belle Firethorn
The cultivar 'Yukon Belle' is a compact hardy selection of narrow-leaved firethorn, an evergreen shrub hailing from southwestern China. The glossy dark green leaves of 'Yukon Belle' beautifully complement the white spring flowers and the orange fall and winter fruits. The leaves are gray and felted underneath. In early to midsummer, the nastily thorned branches are covered in thousands of small, malodorous white blossoms, followed by small flattened green berries that ripen to golden- or red-orange. The shrub remains ablaze with fruits well into winter, to the delight of hungry birds.
Narrow-leaved firethorn does best in well-drained soil in full to partial sun. It is amazingly tolerant of a wide variety of soils and exposures once established. This cultivar is resistant to fire blight, a disease that often afflicts firethorns. Often utilized as a dense, impenetrable hedge or screen, it is equally beautiful as a specimen, its fruits contrasting strikingly with dark-leaved companions. It is a breathtaking espalier for a sun-drenched wall. In some warm climates across the globe, narrow-leaved firethorn is an invasive garden escape, displacing native plants.
