Pyracantha 'Golden Charmer'
Firethorn, Golden Charmer Firethorn
Decorative clusters of light yellow to golden fruits contrast with the dark green foliage of 'Golden Charmer.' A drought-tolerant hybrid, this thorny shrub has a dense upright habit with horizontally tiered branches.
The fully evergreen leaves of this firethorn are dark green and may turn bronze-green in very cold winters. In spring, it bears many showy clusters of small, white, musty-smelling flowers that develop into satiny yellow fruits resembling miniature apples. The flowers are attractive to a wide array of insect pollinators. Fruit color varies from pale to deepest gold. These persist to late winter and are usually not eaten by birds until no other foods are available.
Grow firethorn in full sun and almost any well-drained soil, although slightly acid loams are best. It is versatile in the landscape and may be planted as a tall informal hedge, in a shrub border or trained as an upright espalier or bonsai specimen.
