General Description
With excellent cold hardiness, resistance to powdery mildew and breakage from wind and ice, the Heritage® oak is a shade tree of outstanding growth and character! A hybrid deciduous tree named 'Clemons', it was selected as a seedling from a cross between (Quercus robur) and burr oak (Quercus macrocarpa) found growing in Illinois in 1974. It is sometimes referred to as Quercus mcdanielsii, honoring a late oak hybrid-specialist. This oak also grows from a strong and straight central leader, unlike many young oaks, and also tolerates the huge temperature swings (warm to subfrezzing in hours) often encountered in the American Midwest.
Attaining a rounded canopy with a pyramid-like top, this oak has lustrous dark green leaves with matted lighter gray undersides. Each leaf has five to seven pairs of rounded lobes. Flowering in oaks occurs in spring as new leaves emerge. They are non-showy and occur as drooping male catkins or tiny reddish female flowers on the twigs. Acorns ensue, ripening by fall. The fall foliage color is rather mundane, at best gaining yellow-green hues. In winter the upward-angled branch structure can be admired.
Grow Heritage® in full sun in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil, acidic to alkaline in pH. Tolerant of heat, drought, wind and bitter winter cold, its leaves do not tatter and are resisitant to powdery mildew. Use it as a tough shade tree for landscapes with room, such as parks, large lawns, campuses, cemeteries or golf courses. In good growing conditions this selection is much faster growing than oaks usually are known.
