General Description

The most widspread broadleaf tree in the mid-elevations of the Himalayas, it naturally grows from Pakistan to eastern Nepal. This typically evergreen tree develops a full, rounded canopy and smooth tan-brown bark with lighter flecks of beige that darkens and becomes lightly furrowed and corky with age.

The attractive, leathery leaves are elongated ovals with jagged teeth. Colored a deep, dull green, the leaf undersides are a bright matte silvery gray, resulting from the woolly hairs. Young leaves are soft, glossy and light green, and accompany the pendent pollen-shedding male flowers, called catkins on branch tips in midspring. They are followed by tiny round female flowers that appear at the base of the new leaves. This oak produces acorns that are marble-sized and a deep orange-tan when ripe.

Banj oak is best situated in full to partially sunny spots in a fertile, deep, loamy soil that is acidic. It is best planted in open parks, natural areas or large garden spaces, ideally away from walkways or streets where its acorn litter will not be a nuisance.
