General Description
First introduced to Europe from Turkey in the late sixteenth century, Persian buttercups and their hybrids are still popular in gardens and bouquets. These tender tuberous perennials bear showy pompon-flowers in late spring and early summer. Selected for its dwarf habit as well as for its double, rosebud-shaped blooms, 'Magic Red' bears few-flowered clusters of bright red flowers atop shin-high stems. The leaves, which typically emerge very early in the season, are deeply lobed and bluish-green. Plants go dormant after bloom.
Favorites of florists, Persian buttercups require dry summers and relatively moist mild winters. Plant seeds or plants in fall where hardy; in other areas plant seedlings in spring after danger of freeze. In regions with damp summers give them a well-drained or sloping site. Plants also do well in containers, kept moderately moist in winter and spring and dry in summer and fall. Although perennial in mild climates, they are typically employed as winter- or spring-blooming annuals. Use these colorful perennials for bedding or cutting or for punctuating mixed borders or cottage gardens.
