Family

Arecaceae

Botanical Name

RAVENEA rivularis

Plant Common Name

Majestic Palm, Majesty Palm

General Description

Graceful and truly majestic in appearance, majesty palm originates from the riverbanks of Madagascar. This adaptable tropical palm has fine, gently arching, palm fronds of medium to dark green. The middle of the frond typically twists 90 degrees so that the outermost tip is oriented vertically. These arise from a solitary, smooth, broad-based trunk of gray to sandy brown that has horizontal striations and tapers towards the top. In summer it produces showy, bright orange-red flowers and fruits.

Majesty palm will tolerate full sun to partial shade and grows strongly in fertile soil that is evenly moist and moderately drained. It is commonly container grown and makes a great patio specimen and good interior plant if adequate humidity and light are available. Where hardy, it may be planted in large containers outdoors or as a singular landscape specimen. It loves moisture. Mature specimens can develop untidy crowns in time and dead or dying fronds should be removed as needed.
