John Rickard

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

RHAPHIOLEPIS 'Montic'(MAJESTIC BEAUTY®)

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Indian Hawthorn

General Description

Easy to grow and graced with beautiful fragrant flowers, Indian hawthorn is a large shrub or small tree, well-branched and vigorous. The leaves are large, leathery, glossy, oval, alternately arranged on the stems and have serrate edges – like a steak knife. Its leaves are red/purple or bronze when they emerge. The large pink flowers are single and commonly appear in the spring. They are produced at the ends of the branches in huge, branched clusters. Each bloom is star-shaped and has pointed petals. This selection, Majestic Beauty®, produces showy, apple-like, blue-black fruit after it flowers.

The parent is a Rhaphiolepis native to the warm and temperate regions of eastern Asia. Majestic Beauty® (also known as ‘Montic’) is evergreen and can be grown as either a small tree or large shrub. It is upright in form, has good tolerance to cold and heat and is resistant to leaf-spot disease.

Like other Indian hawthorns, Majestic Beauty® tolerates drought and poor soils, but prefers rich, well-drained soil that is on the acid side. Full sun is best for good growth, though this shrub tolerates light to moderate shade, particularly in hot, humid climates. It also tolerates of wind and salt spray

Attractive foliage and flowers and a tough pruneable character have made this a common ornamental. Tolerant of city conditions, Rhaphiolepis is extensively planted in urban areas in beds, hedges and as small specimen trees.
