Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

RHAPHIOLEPIS 'Pinkie'

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Indian Hawthorn

General Description

Easy to grow and graced with beautiful fragrant flowers, Indian hawthorn ‘Pinkie’ is a well-branched, vigorous, spreading shrub. The leaves are leathery, glossy, elliptical, alternately arranged on the stems, and have serrate edges – like a steak knife. New foliage is red/purple or bronze when it emerges. The abundant dark- pink flowers are single and commonly appear in the late spring and early summer. They are produced at the ends of the branches in loose, branched clusters. Each flower is star-shaped and has pointed petals. Like some other cultivars, ‘Pinkie’ produces showy, apple-like, blue-black fruit after it flowers.

The genus Rhaphiolepis is native to the warm and temperate regions of eastern Asia. It tolerates drought and poor soils, but prefers rich, well-drained soil that is on the acid side. Full sun is best for good growth, though Indian hawthorn tolerates light to moderate shade, particularly in hot, humid climates. It also tolerates wind and salt spray

Attractive foliage and flowers and a tough pruneable character have made Indian hawthorns a popular shrub. Moderately sized, mounding-spreading in form, and evergreen, ‘Pinkie’ is beautiful in beds. It tolerates city conditions and can planted in urban in beds, hedges and containers.
