General Description

Rhododendron ‘Aida’ is a spring blooming deciduous azalea. Its large flowers are tubular-funnel-shaped and double hose-in-hose which means it looks like two flowers stacked. The color is bright pink with a rose throat and dark spots. The foliage is medium green.

These azaleas have upright, rounded and open habits. The leaves are green, hairy and exhibit showy fall color in shades of yellow, orange and red. The colorful flowers appear before the foliage. Clusters of blooms emerge near the ends of the branches. Buds develop in the summer for flowers the following spring, so prune them shortly after blooming.

Azaleas prefer sites with partial shade and highly organic, acid soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. Plant them shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. They prefer locations with warm summers, cool winters and do require some winter cold for good growth. Deciduous azaleas are popular for woodland gardens, shaded beds and borders.
