Family
Ericaceae
Botanical Name
RHODODENDRON 'Colonel Coen'
Plant Common Name
Rhododendron
General Description
Featuring showy flowers in mid-spring and handsome foliage year-round, this hybrid rhododendron bears domed clusters of deep purple funnel-shaped flowers with burgundy speckles on their upper lobes. The long, elliptic, slightly wrinkled leaves are glossy dark green. This cultivar eventually forms a rounded head-high shrub.
Like most rhododendrons, 'Colonel Coen' prefers some shade and a highly organic acid soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. Plant it shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Do any necessary pruning directly after the flowers fade, before next year's buds form. Try to site it where it will not need to be pruned back.
This handsome and hardy rhododendron is ideal for shrub borders and informal hedges.
