Botanical Name
RHODODENDRON 'Copperman'( Glenn Dale Hybrid)
Plant Common Name
Evergreen Azalea
General Description
Displaying showy clusters of large brilliant orange-red blooms in late spring, 'Copperman' is one of more than 400 evergreen azalea hybrids developed from the late 1920s through the 1940s at the United States Department of Agriculture’s Plant Introduction Station at Glenn Dale, Maryland.
Eventually forming a waist-high, rounded shrub, 'Copperman' has medium-sized oval leaves that are are bronze-tinged when young. The funnel-shaped, single, purple-blotched flowers are held on strong stems and drop after fading rather than persisting on the plant. Glenn Dale hybrids may lose some leaves in winter in the coldest parts of their hardiness range.
Like most other azaleas, this cultivar prefers partial shade and highly organic acid soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. Plant it shallowly and mulch with pine needles, bark mulch, or other organic material to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. It does best in warm summers but requires some winter cold for good growth. The flower buds form in summer, so prune immediately after bloom.
Noted for their relative cold-hardiness as well as for their beauty, Glenn Dale Hybrids are popular for foundation plantings, mixed borders, hedges, and naturalistic gardens.
