RHODODENDRON 'Coral Sea'

Image of Rhododendron 'Coral Sea' (Chisolm-Merritt Hybrid)

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

RHODODENDRON 'Coral Sea'( Chisolm-Merritt Hybrid)

Plant Common Name

Coral Sea Azalea

General Description

The evergreen azalea ‘Coral Sea’ bears beautiful light coral-pink blooms with pointed petals. The early- to mid-spring flowers are single, funnel-shaped, and wavy-edged, with a contrasting central blotch. The upright, medium-sized plants have oval hairy dark green leaves.

This cultivar is part of a group of hybrids developed by Julian J. Chisolm in the late 1940s and later released by Dr. E. I. Merritt. Most include the hardy East Asian azalea Rhododendron yedoense variety poukhanense in their ancestry.

Azaleas prefer partial shade and highly organic acid soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. Plant them shallowly and mulch with pine needles, bark mulch, or other organic material to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. They do best in warm summers and require some winter cold for good growth. Buds for next spring's flowers form in summer, so do any necessary pruning soon after flowering ends. Try to choose a cultivar that will not need to be pruned to fit its space.

Evergreen azaleas are popular for foundation plantings, mixed borders, hedges, and naturalistic gardens.
