General Description

Rhododendron ‘Corneille’ is a mid to late spring blooming deciduous azalea, one of the Ghent hybrids. Its fragrant flowers are funnel-tubular-shaped and double hose-in-hose which mean they look like two blooms stacked. The color is pale rose with darker rose edges. The plants are upright and moderate in size.

The deciduous Ghent hybrid azaleas were developed, developed in Belgium about 150 years ago from crosses between native North American azaleas and Rhododendron luteum from Europe. Most are hardy and medium to tall with scented, single or double blooms.

Deciduous azaleas have upright, rounded habits. The leaves are dark green, hairy and exhibit showy fall color in shades of yellow, orange and red. Clusters of blooms emerge near the ends of the branches. Buds develop in the summer for flowers the following spring, so prune them shortly after blooming.

Azaleas prefer sites with partial shade and highly organic, acid soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. Plant them shallowly and mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. They prefer locations with warm summers, cool winters and do require some winter cold for good growth. The Ghent hybrid azaleas are popular for woodland gardens, shaded beds and borders.
